Men In Tears
In 1972, Edmund Muskie was a front-runner for the presidential nomination of the U.S. Democratic Party. During the New Hampshire primary, he choked with anger and seemed to cry because of a couple of nasty newspaper articles. One was a hoax, the other an article attacking his wife. The result was that he was perceived as weak and incapable of leadership, and his campaign collapsed.

Through the tears
At some point in the late 19th century, at the same time as they began to find sex problematic, Anglo-Saxon men stopped crying. It was an odd, somewhat arbitrary move, as if they had suddenly decided that it was unmanly to laugh or to scratch an itch. Weeping is, after all, a normal human function. Homer's superheroes cry loud and long; Shakespeare's men shed tears all the time; and to this very day, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Arab, African, Polish and Brazilian men are not embarrassed to weep or to express emotion. But in Britain, male tears became taboo, and the culture as a whole grew wary of strong feeling.
Men, Women And Tears
The notion that men should not display their emotions in public, and most specifically that they should never shed tears, was enshrined during the 19th century in the Spartan code of English public schools, which popularized the doctrine of the stiff upper lip, and was articulated by many writers, from early Victorian Charles Kingsley ("Men must work, and women must weep") to late Victorian "Mr. Dooley" ("Among men . . . wet eye manes dhry heart").

"I Don't Want Tears"
"Dear Mother," wrote young Jim in a matter-of-fact, confident and impersonal style that came naturally to the professional son of a professional soldier: "This is a letter to an Army wife. I don't want tears spilled on it! . . . Early in March, I leave for Korea. I will fly a B-26 in combat. I am the pilot. I will have a bombardier in the nose, a navigator beside me and a gunner in the rear. We will fly at night. I carry bombs and machine guns, and I will know how to use them.
